The new year for the Lake Houston Gardeners kicks off with a presentation on growing mushroom, from the owner of Lonestar Mushrooms, a three year old company in Tomball. Michael Frederick, co-owner of the company with his brothers, with talk about his business and offer mushroom kits for sale in case anyone wants to try growing some exotic fungi at home.
The meeting will be at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church on Woodland Hills drive in Kingwood. It starts at 6:30 p.m. with some refreshments, with the presentation starting around 7 p.m., followed by a plant exchange. As a special treat, the refreshments will include samples of jams and sauces from the OFE Growers inventory. Jars will also be available for purchase, and this year, the gardeners can take credit cards without additional costs. The available inventory of the summer bounty is updated daily on the OFE Growers website.
Lonestar Mushrooms started as a kitchen table business three years ago, and has upgraded to the garage and now is outgrowing its 900 sq. ft warehouse. The company sells to directly to local restaurants and through farmer’s markets, and specializes in types of fungi that are hard to find in grocery stores.
