Fertilizer Sale
The annual Microlife fertilizer sale is now open for members of Lake Houston Gardeners and friends. Prices remain the same as last year, which reflects a significant discount from retail prices. All orders ae due by the Feb. 12 monthly meeting of the garden club, or can be mailed to the address on the order form.
The fertilizer sale is one of two fundraisers for the OFE Growers, a non-profit organization which funds the garden project at Oak Forest Elementary School, where several members volunteer. The fertilizer sale provides 20-25% of the organization’s $10,000 operating budget. Sales of canned goods and along with small donations make up the remainder of the budget.
“Healthy soils, healthy plants, healthy people”
Microlife products are all organic and nontoxic and will not harm people, pets or wildlife. Microlife products are even used at the Houston Zoo to help maintain the lush natural environments and also be safe to the animals.
Microlife fertilizers, in addition to providing the essential NPK nutrients, also contain ingredients that improve the living habitat of the soil. Every gram of soil contains millions of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and other tiny creatures. Some of these organisms are harmful to plants, but the vast majority are beneficial. By maintaining a natural balance of “good” organisms to pests, the need for fungicides and pesticides is avoided. These “cide” products kill good and bad organisms indiscriminately, leading to degradation of the soil and toxic buildup over time.
Chemical fertilizers also contain salts which build up in the soil and also destroy the soil habitat, leading to oxygen depletion and soil compaction as air pockets produced by soil organisms collapse. Whereas chemical fertilizers are cheaper and produce quicker results in the short run, in the long run they deplete the soil and require more products to produce the same results.
