Field Trip: Washington-on-the-Brazos

Join the Lake Houston Gardeners for a fall field trip to  the birthplace of Texas and enjoy lunch at a quirky local cafe,  while leaving the driving to Harris County. The club has scheduled this lovely day for Friday, Oct 14.

The bus will leave the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church at 8:15a.m. and travel to the Visitor’s Center  at Washsington-on-the-Brazos and Museum, which includes a guided tour of Independence Hall and Washington Townsite.  Next, we will travel to the Barrington Plantation,  a  replica working farm and  home of the last president of the Republic of Texas, complete with staff and volunteers in period clothing demonstrating farm life in the 1850’s.

Lunch is at nearby Navasota at the Classic Rock Kitchen, about 6 miles from the historic site.  The bus returns to Kingwood around 4p.m.

The cost for admission to Barrington Plantation is $7 for seniors; the visitor’s center and museum are free.  The bus ride is also free, courtesy of Harris County Precinct 3.

This picturesque park is located on the Brazos River, Washington was the site of the 1836 General Convention which would decide the fate of Texas. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is  the site of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Washington remained a town of some prominence in early Texas until the eve of the Civil War.
