At the April meeting of the Lake Houston Gardeners, we will get a lesson on the nature ID app iNaturalist.
Bring your phones so you can follow along with the presentation by Alicia Mein-Johnson. the director of Education and Outreach at Jesse Jones Park. The meeting will be Monday, April 11, at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Kingwood. Social time starts at 6:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a plant exchange.
iNaturalist is a plant an animal ID smartphone app, but it is also much more. The data that is collected is used by many organizations to identify the frequency and range of organisms in our environment, and it makes everyday citizens part of scientific inquiry.
Our speaker is the Director of Education and Outreach at Jesse Jones Park and nature center in Humble. she has been a high school science teacher and coach, and has taken students on hundreds of field trips, both locally and internationally. She volunteers on the board of the Texas Association for Environmental Education, is a Master Naturalist and a Texas Certified Environmental Educator.
Alicia earned a B.S. in Biology and Speech Communication from Trinity University, where she also ran Cross Country and Track and Field. In her spare time, She gardens for blueberries and butterflies, and she is a huge Astros fan.
